Youth experiencing trauma and homelessness often arrive at afterschool programs carrying invisible burdens that directly impact their behavior, learning, and ability to build relationships. This interactive session explores the realities of youth homelessness, the prevalence of homelessness in our communities, and the science behind how trauma impacts brain development, memory, emotional regulation, and learning. Participants will engage in an immersive homelessness simulation designed to build empathy and deepen their understanding of the daily challenges many youth face. The session concludes with practical, trauma-informed strategies and ready-to-use resources that educators and out-of-school professionals can implement immediately to support dysregulated students, strengthen relationships, and create environments where every child feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.
