Description

Literacy in afterschool should be more than homework help—and it should never feel like another hour of school! This interactive session explores practical, engaging ways to create a literacy-rich OST environment where reading, writing, speaking, listening, and vocabulary are naturally embedded throughout the program day. Participants will discover strategies for integrating literacy into STEM, games, art, movement, enrichment, and everyday routines while supporting Science of Reading principles. Attendees will explore ways to engage reluctant readers, increase student choice and voice, strengthen staff practices, and build meaningful school, family, and community connections. Participants will leave with ready-to-use strategies and a simple action plan for making literacy joyful, relevant, and part of their program culture.
