What happens when we stop measuring volunteers primarily by hours served and start developing them as relationship-builders? This session explores one community-based OST program’s journey from transactional volunteerism toward reflective practice, meaningful contribution, and developmental leadership. Attendees will examine practical strategies for helping college students learn the culture of a program and community, build relationships with youth and families, reflect on what they observe, and translate those insights into programming and leadership. The session also addresses an ongoing challenge: how can OST programs sustain relational practice without depending on one exceptional staff member? Attendees will leave with practical strategies for strengthening volunteer development and relational practice in their own programs.
