The school day rarely has room for individualized reading instruction or unhurried time with stories — but out-of-school time can offer both. This session presents a two-part model for using afterschool time to move the needle on reading: first, using targeted screening to identify students with decoding gaps and deliver scripted, staff- or volunteer-friendly instruction with built-in progress monitoring and accountability; second, building vocabulary, background knowledge, and a genuine love of reading through storytelling and read-aloud practice. Together, these approaches address both halves of the Simple View of Reading — word recognition and language comprehension — giving programs a complete, realistic model for literacy impact. Drawing on real program data, including a jump from 8% to 73% first-grade reading mastery at one partner site, presenters will show how afterschool time can become a genuine literacy intervention window, not just a homework-help hour.
